Abstract

Jesus' Farewell to the Disciples continues and intensifies the quest for uncovering the full potential of narrative criticism of the Fourth Gospel by means of a narratological analysis of John 13:1-17:26. After a discussion of theoretical issues the author selects a particular narratological model. This is discussed in detail and then utilised for a systematic analysis of John 13:1-17:26. The results of the analysis are integrated in order to indicate the way in which a particular perspective on discipleship is presented in these chapters. This book is important for scholars who are interested in the application of narrative criticism to biblical texts, as well as in the Johannine perspective on discipleship.

Abstract

This study traces the debate surrounding Luke's use of the Gospel of Mark and special sources, such as Proto-Luke, in a section of the passion narrative (Lk 22,54-23,25). The survey covers roughly the period from the 1880's to 1997. Part I details the development from P. Feine to the 1960's. Part II begins with G. Schneider continuing up through 1997. In treating each scholar's position, the author reviews their underlying Synoptic theory, their source theory in the passion in general, then the trial of Pilate, and finally the trial before Herod. Part III is devoted to an interpretation of Lk 23,6 - 16. Part IV contains the list of abbreviations, the bibliography, and three appendices: (1) Special LQ vocabulary and constructions according to J. Weiss; (2) Lukan priority theories; and (3) the Gospel of Peter and its relation to the Herod pericope. Part IV concludes with the name index. The Lukan Passion Narrative will be particularly useful to those concerned with Luke's redactional technique, Source theories, Minor Agreements, and the history of exegesis.

Abstract

C.H. Turner pioneered the study of the language and style of Mark's Gospel in a series of articles in the 1920s entitled 'Notes on Marcan usage'. All but one appeared in the Journal of Theological Studies — one further 'Note' is published now for the first time. It is Turner's articles, reprinted with editorial additions, that form the backbone of the present book. Comparable articles by those who have followed in C.H. Turner's footsteps (G.D. Kilpatrick, J.K. Elliott, N. Turner) are also included. Some of these are published for the first time. These studies into the language, style and usage are relevant for work not only on exegesis, but also on the textual criticism of the Gospel and on the synoptic problem. This volume makes these essays accessible in one place and these together with the new studies form a convenient reference tool for Marcan scholars.
